Family conversations on baseball and past glories
My sister (20) and my brother (24) had an epic facebook battle that you won’t find as funny as I did but I had to keep a record of it. It all started with a status update…
Melissa: Utley you are a stud
Nate: dislike!
Melissa: You’re cheering for the Yankees Nathan? Lame.
Nate: yes yes i am
Melissa: Weak!
Nate: hey shut up. seeing how you played softball shouldn’t you be cheering for the womens national team?
Melissa: Lock it up. If you put me, Dave and you together when we were all 12 I would have hit the ball further than both of you guys. Yes I would get a softball and have a softball pitcher and you guys would be in hardball BUT I am a girl. So suck it. Daddy will back me up on that too.
Nate: is this some sick joke? melissa i was jackin them all the time. you and dave are gonna have to fight that one out!
Melissa: Nathan, I came to EVERY single one of your games back then. You were most definetly not “jacking them all the time” I was happy for you when you got walked to first big guy.
Nate: Good one. Think you were at the wrong games or too busy at the concessions stands? i got pics to prove it too
Melissa: Hahahahaahahaahahaahahaha Ouch. I’ll leave it alone, I don’t want this to get ugly

You’re just a fanboy if you don’t think this man pitched an absolute gem. It is so, so, so rare to have a night like tonight that isn’t forced by sportscasters. We saw a man who once destroyed the National League as a kid, a man who went on to become one of the most dominate pitchers of all time. A man who got old, had arm problems, lost MPHs off of his fastball and failed (for him at least).
This very dramatic and talented man then stepped on the mound tonight against the best lineup baseball has to offer, at the age of 38, and dazzled. He embarrassed the best hitter of my generation. He gave up, by my count, 4 hard hit balls in 6 innings. Sometimes numbers don’t reflect how great a pitching performance was, especially within the overall narrative (which, I’ll admit, I’m a huge sucker for). This is one of those times.
A.J. was unreal, the Yanks tied up the series, meh. I’ll remember this game 5 years from now, though. I will. I’ll remember it because I got to see a player who I was in awe of growing up, a guaranteed hall-of-famer, have it one more time.
That never happens.
I’m thankful I got to see him work one more time and I’m greedily hoping for one more Pedro performance these playoffs.

I liked this story from woefullymisinformed:
I wore a Phillies t-shirt as I walked to the coffee shop just now. Outside the shop, a guy was wearing a Yankees hat, sitting with his friend.
“Phillies suck,” he said to me as I walked by.
“Yeah, I guess that’s why they made the Yankees look like the company softball team last night,” I responded.
His friend laughed. I went in the coffee shop. I am never that cool, ever. Today is a good day.

Great line. That has to feel good.
